Blast Media Walnut Shells

Engine Carbon Cleaning with Walnut Shells – Walnut Blasting

Eden Products Ltd are the leading UK supplier of Walnut Shell Granules for use on a range of Shot Blast Equipment.

Direct injected cars have one major drawback over port-injected engines, which is that carbon deposits can build up over time, requiring them to be removed at regular intervals throughout the lifespan of the engine. The most effective and common method to do this is the use of Walnut Shells in a process commonly known as Walnut Blasting. Walnut blasting is when crushed and graded walnut shells are blown into the car’s engine (intake valve) with an air compressor. It works like a sand blaster removing the carbon deposits from the surface being blasted. Walnut blasting is recognised by most mechanics as one of the safest and most efficient methods of removing carbon deposits from your car’s intake manifold and intake valves. Almost all direct-injected engines will require this de-carbonisation process completed at regular intervals during the lifespan of the car’s engine.

Walnuts are pre-ground, cleaned, and the membrane and fat are removed from the shell before they go for further processing. They are specifically ground on hammer and roller mills to get the correct size and surface of the granule. Walnut Shells are ground to various sizes (coarse, Medium and fine) for the use in a variety of applications.

Blasting Grades & Applications

Typical Blasting Grades

  • Eden Walnut Shell EPWSG 8/16 – 1 / 2mm
  • Eden Walnut Shell EPWSG 16/5 – 0.75 / 1.3mm
  • Eden Walnut Shell EPWSG 16/30 – 0.5 / 1mm

Applications

Eden Walnut Shells are used in a similar manner to other blast media and can be used for more than removing carbon build-up in engines.

The advantages of using Eden Walnut Shells for the blasting process include:

  • Walnut Shells are environmentally friendly, natural, and non-toxic
  • Using Walnut Shells do not produce dust and they are safe for indoor use
  • Walnut Shells cause no health or environmental hazards in their usage
  • They are long-lasting, re-usable and biodegradable
  • Surfaces blasted with Walnut Shells require no drying time

In addition to the carbon cleaning process, Walnut Shells have other industrial applications.

In the drilling industry, Walnut Shells can be used as a loss circulation media to prevent the loss of drilling fluids and prevent damage to the wellbore. They are added to drilling fluids to fill in the spaces that occur during drilling, preventing the drilling fluid from being lost in formation fractures.

Walnut Shells can also be used as a burnout media in the ceramics and catalysts industry. During the manufacturing process of ceramics and catalysts, the binders and other organic materials used must be burned out to ensure that the final product has the desired properties. Walnut Shells are used as a burnout media due to their high heat resistance, low ash content, and ability to release gasses evenly during the burnout process.

Finally, Walnut Shell powder can be used as an extender for resins and glues. The powder can be added to the resin or glue to increase the volume and reduce the cost of the product. The Walnut Shell Powder is porous and lightweight, making it a suitable choice as an extender for resins and glues. The addition of Walnut Shell powder to resins and glues can also improve the physical properties of the final product, such as increasing its strength and reducing shrinkage.
